The Area

The County Down region

This is a superb walking area. The majestic Mountains of Mourne and the Ring of Gullion areas provide an outstanding backdrop for walkers of all types.

With a wide variety of walks that cater for a broad range of fitness, ability and experience, the area offers flat easy coastal routes and canal towpaths to testing slopes and mountains.

Ireland is a favourite destination for golfers looking for challenging courses, good hospitality and competitive green fees. The local courses are mostly undulating parkland courses that offer the golfer an interesting challenge with tight sloping fairways and valleys and well-maintained greens.

The Ring of Gullion and the Mournes provide a backdrop of hills, mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, coastal plains and award winning beaches, making the option of seeing it all on horseback also extremely appealing.

Newry and Mourne is largely coastal, offering great opportunities for water sports. Carlingford Lough, Camlough Lake and Lough Ross provide sheltered conditions for a range of water based activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and water skiing.

Cranfield Beach provides safe, clean sea bathing.

Sheltered harbours and pontoons such as at Annalong provide safe and secure mooring facilities for keeled yachts and cruisers. Leisure crafts are also welcome in Warrenpoint.

Newry and Mourne offers a wide range of facilities for children. As well as pleasant rural walking, cycling and fine beaches, there are excellent play areas in many of our parks, notably Warrenpoint Municipal Park and Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor. Slieve Gullion Forest Park boasts its award winning attraction ‘The Giants Lair’ which is well worth a visit too.

Indoor activities include Kilkeel Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool, Newry Sports Centre, Newry Swimming Pool, Formula Karting in Newry, Newry Omniplex and Annalong Cornmill (for older children). Sheepbridge family entertainment centre, to name but a few..
